Impressionism

Impressionism came up in the second half of the 19th century (ie from 1850 onwards).

The painters didn't want to paint the bare object shapes and focused more on a picture-development with light and color. Although the images sometimes seem to be very realistic, the painters only set color areas and didn't paint a whole object.

You can see it in this painting:
- 'Rough' brush strokes are visible
- The person seems somehow realistic
- The details (eg, hands and ears ) are more 'rough' painted (it was simply the result of the painter’s color/light feeling)

I have drawn it like this…

I wanted to capture the typical Impressionism character of the painting with pencil, ie I wanted to draw the brush strokes, and I also wanted to create a realistic impression of the person.

I have chosen another processes (not my usually one), because this was the 'prototype' for an impressionistic drawing.

I have made the drawing without a preliminary drawing, line by line only with the grid-method. I used pencil and cardboard in the first step and modeled the contrast in a second step, with all my other tools.

In the first step the image is thus created from top to bottom .

In the second step, the contrasts are intensivied and araes are smoothed out.
