Description

Iceland 13th Century

'No, no, in the nights of the new moon, we don’t go to the other water side - none of us. '

'Even the ancients knew it. There are things that cannot be changed and should not be questioned.'

'On such nights, we lock up the cattle and shut all windows and doors.'

'Mostly it begins shortly before midnight. First, only a single bell is sounding.'

'You want to convince yourself that it is the flow in the bay, but the longer the night, the more frequently the bells sound.'

'A long time ago the church was built, in order to expel the pagan gods of the people.'

‘When the people increasingly found shelter in the new faith, the gods intervened.'

'Odin has raged for days and the inhabitants fled to the church - they thought the stone walls will protect them.'

'In vain - Odin just dropped the whole hillside down into the lake.'

'It is said, as a punishment, the souls of the dead must ring the bells on every new moon, until the gods are pleased.'

'Sometimes some of the spirits seek the light of the moon and get lost.'

'They shake the windows and doors - then no one should be out there...'
