Atahualpa = comic drawing

April.21.2014      DIN-A4      11.7 x 8.3 inch

Description

South America - West Coast (3rd of July, 1533)

'Great Spirit, give me strength and let me lead my people on a safe path.'

'The whites are powerful and unpredictable. Our arrows and spears can do nothing against their thunder-weapons.'

'I fear for the Incas.'

'With gold and silver I will buy my freedom and then lead the warriors into battle.'

Contact to the Spaniards

At their arrival, Atahualpa receives the Spaniards friendly, but an incident changes the mood of the Europeans:

As a Spanish priest asks the Inca to convert to Christianity and hands him a Bible, Atahualpa does not know anything to do with it and throws the book into the dust.

The Christians (who, can not understand today why the Muslims are highly responsive to contempt for the Quran) fell into fury, killed thousands of Incas and took Atahualpa into custody.

The Spaniards got very interested as Atahualpa promised a lot of gold for his release.

They gladly accepted the gold - but there was no release - instead, a pretext was invented and Atahualpa was sentenced to death.

Execution

A highlight of the European-Christian understanding of man is certainly the execution of Atahualpa.

He should be burned. Not even in Europe it was a normal method of execution, but for the 'God-fearing' conquistadors this was no problem. For an Inca it was unimaginable to die in a fire, because in there believing, the fire destroys the soul.

When a 'Christian Brother' ‘helped’ and 'persuaded' Atahualpa to change to Christianity and to be baptized, the method of execution was converted to strangulation.

Atahualpa was murdered.
